What Is Trichology?

Trichology is a field dedicated to the health of the hair and scalp. It combines knowledge from dermatology, cosmetology, and biology to understand how the scalp functions, why hair falls out, weakens, or loses its natural shine, and how these issues can be effectively addressed. Although trichology is often associated mainly with hair loss, in reality it covers a much broader range of topics related to both the aesthetics and the overall health of the scalp.

Today, trichology is a rapidly developing branch of science, but its roots go back more than 100 years.

A Brief History of Trichology – Where Did It Begin?

  • The origins of trichology date back to the 1920s in the United Kingdom.
It was there that the first institutes dedicated to studying scalp and hair problems were established.
  • In 1902, the Institute of Trichologists was founded in London — the world’s first organization training specialists in this field.
The Institute still operates today and remains one of the most important educational centers.
  • In the second half of the 20th century, trichology began to develop in the USA, Italy, and France, where the first professional laboratories producing trichological cosmetics were created.
  • In Poland, trichology started gaining popularity only after the year 2000, with a true boom occurring in the last decade — driven by growing awareness of scalp health.
  • Today, trichology is considered one of the fastest‑growing areas of cosmetology and aesthetic dermatology.

What Does Trichology Address?

Trichology focuses on diagnosing and supporting the treatment of issues such as:

  • excessive hair loss
  • various types of alopecia (androgenic, telogen, alopecia areata)
  • dry and oily dandruff
  • seborrhea and excessive scalp oiliness
  • itching, irritation, and redness
  • flaking and dryness of the scalp
  • weakened, thinning hair and loss of volume
  • scalp imbalance caused by stress, illness, medications, or chemical treatments

Trichology takes a holistic approach to hair — considering diet, hormones, stress, hair‑care habits, and environmental factors.

What Does a Trichologist Do?

A trichologist analyzes the condition of the scalp and hair, identifies the causes of problems, and selects appropriate care methods and treatment plans. Their work includes:

  • trichoscopy (examining the scalp under magnification)
  • analysis of hair‑care habits
  • selection of professional trichological products
  • creating individualized treatment plans
  • monitoring therapy progress

The goal of a trichologist is to restore balance to the scalp and create optimal conditions for healthy hair growth.

The Benefits of Trichology — Why Is It So Important?

1. It identifies causes, not just symptoms - trichology helps determine why hair falls out or the scalp reacts abnormally, making treatment more effective.

2. It combines nature with science - many therapies are based on phyto‑extracts, essential oils, and active ingredients with proven effects.

3. It takes a holistic approach - it considers diet, stress, hormones, lifestyle, and hair‑care routines — all factors that influence hair health.

4. It is safe and non‑invasive - trichological treatments rely on cosmetics, massages, peels, and home‑care routines.

5. It delivers real results - regular therapy improves scalp condition, reduces hair loss, supports hair growth, and enhances overall appearance.
